All Boys Aren't Blue

George M. Johnson is an award-winning journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist – and he wrote this memoir not to say he knows it all before the age of 40, but to help even one person that struggles with what he grappled with as a youth – gender identity and what it means to be Black and Queer when it felt like these labels often counter-weighted each other. His recollections were raw and honest – and he didn’t shy away from the unvarnished truth of his life and experiences – which is why I think this is such a powerful book for young adults that are looking for a flashlight in a complicated inner and outer world – especially one that has historically relied on clear-cut labels to define who we are at birth. As I’ve said many times lately – I’m so impressed and proud of the YA space these days; it gives validity and reassurance to the many amazingly unique and wonderful young people out there finding their way. 🏳️‍🌈❤️
