How have I not read Elizabeth Acevedo before this?! Wow. Ok, so let me back up - I've never read a book in this style, so when I first opened it, I thought "where is the dialogue?" and I wasn't sure how I'd connect with a format that felt pretty new to me. Well.
THIS BOOK IS ART.
A plane crashes, and many people die - including one passenger - a father. Only both Camino Rios and Yahaira Rios think they are the ONLY daughter he is living behind. No; instead his death invites two secret parallel lives to learn about each other. Camino lives in the Dominican Republic and only sees her father in the summer; Yahaira Rios lives in NYC and sees her father the rest of the year. They did not know of each other until their Papi's death unveiled this truth, and this is the story of what happens next when grief and love are tied hand and hand.
This book, you guys. I felt this one, and it's the most stunning masterpiece I've read in awhile. Now, it's time to get a hold of her other books!
